Calusa? What a funny name you may think? But there is a historical story behind that name. “Calusa” is the name of the Indian tribe that had occupied the area for over 2,000 years. They were great fishermen and hunters who lived in peaceful coexistence with nature. But eventually they were running out of luck. After the arrival of the Spanish fleet, the Indian tribe, which had a population of about 1,000 at its peak, was doomed. Nobody knows it for sure, but probably all of them were already gone by the time Florida joined the Union as the 27th state in 1845.

But they are not forgotten; at least this upscale gated Golf Community in Nokomis FL bears their name. In addition, several street names in the Calusa Lakes are named after Indian tribes, which are associated with them. Tocobago, Timucua and Muskogee Indians lived at the same time on Florida’s West Coast.
